🧱 See It

A square number lines up tiles flat, in rows and columns. A cube number stacks those flat layers on top of each other until the whole thing is a solid block — equal in length, width, and height.

Picture a 3×3 grid of tiny unit cubes — that's one layer, 9 cubes. Now stack 3 of those layers directly on top of each other. The result is a solid cube, 3 units on every edge, made of 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 tiny cubes total.

Layer 1 (9 cubes) + Layer 2 (9 cubes) + Layer 3 (9 cubes) = 27 cubes, arranged into one solid 3×3×3 cube.

🔢 Write It

3³ = 27  (three cubed)

∛27 = 3  (the cube root of twenty-seven)

Cubing and cube-rooting are opposite moves — just like squaring and square-rooting, but one dimension higher.

💡 Worked Examples

Example 1 — Cube a number:

  1. Cubing means "times itself, three times": 4 × 4 × 4
  2. 4 × 4 = 16, then 16 × 4 = 64
  3. Answer: 64

Example 2 — Find a cube root: ∛125

  1. Ask: "what number times itself three times makes 125?"
  2. Check 5 × 5 × 5: 5 × 5 = 25, then 25 × 5 = 125 — that's it.
  3. Answer: ∛125 = 5

Watch for: forgetting the third multiplication — computing side × side and stopping there, which accidentally squares the number instead of cubing it. This is an easy slip once squaring feels automatic. Have him explicitly write out all three factors (4 × 4 × 4) before multiplying anything, rather than trying to shortcut the exponent in his head.
